Srinagar, Apr 06 (KNO): In Kashmir government jobs are often seen as the primary career goal, a young woman from South Kashmir's Bijbehara area in Anantnag district is quietly challenging the norm and inspiring others to think beyond conventional paths. Shamsun Nissa, a postgraduate in Botany, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) has turned her entrepreneurial dream into reality with the launch of her bakery venture “Cakes and Brews.” The venture, which began operations in February 2026 and was formally inaugurated on February 15, has already started gaining popularity among locals for its quality offerings at affordable prices. Speaking about her journey, Shamsun Nissa said her decision to step into the food business was driven by a desire to bridge the gap between premium quality and affordability. "I chose this field because I wanted to provide premium bakery and food items at an affordable price. There is a perception that quality always comes at a high cost, and I wanted to change that,” she said. Despite coming from an academic background in science, she did not hesitate to explore a completely different career path. Her courage to shift domains reflects a growing trend among educated youth who are willing to take risks and pursue entrepreneurship. Within a short span of time, “Cakes and Brews” has witnessed encouraging response from customers, something Shamsun attributes to dedication, consistency, and understanding customer preferences. "Alhamdulillah, the business is running very well. The support from people has been overwhelming, and it motivates me to keep improving and expanding,” she added. Buoyed by the success of her first venture, she has already set her sights on expansion. Her next project, titled “The Lounge by Cakes and Brews,” is in the pipeline and promises to offer a premium experience. The upcoming outlet, planned at Zirpora Bijbehara, will be a coffee-cum-ice cream lounge aimed at creating a modern and comfortable space for youth and families alike. Beyond business, Shamsun Nissa is passionate about encouraging others—especially unemployed youth and women—to rethink their approach towards careers. "Jobs are not the only option for career growth. You can come out of your shells and become job providers instead of job seekers,” she said. She emphasized that entrepreneurship not only ensures self-reliance but also contributes to society by generating employment opportunities. Addressing educated women in particular, she urged them to take initiative and break barriers. "I would like to tell educated women to come forward, start your own ventures, and be independent. I am sure you will excel in life. There are millions of opportunities waiting—you just need to take the first step,” she said—(KNO)
